JR Communications

JR Communications LLC is the business name for Jennie Rees, the longtime Louisville turf writer turned publicity specialist and advocate in the racehorse industry.

Trackside Jennie

“Trackside” Jennie today: Rees is the communications specialist for both the Kentucky and the National Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association (HBPA), relationships that began in 2016 after she left The (Louisville) Courier-Journal following 32 years covering horse racing for Kentucky's largest newspaper. Regular clients include the Preakness Stakes, Indiana Derby and various HBPA affiliates. Jennie spent 10 years as publicity director for Kentucky Downs (2016-2025) and seven in the same capacity at Ellis Park (2016-2022). She has also done project work for the Association of Racing Commissioners International, Second Stride, Highlander Training Center and Kentucky Living. Part of her work for the Kentucky HBPA involves providing racing content, including video interviews, free to resource-strapped news outlets on the road to the Kentucky Derby and at the Breeders’ Cup, as well for other major races at Kentucky's five racetracks. She prides herself on developing relationships with civic officials and legislators, explaining the jobs-heavy racing industry. Jennie is also available for speaking engagements, including handicapping the Derby and explaining the basics of betting horses for special events. She is known for mentoring journalists of all ages about the ins and outs of covering horse racing.

Background

Rees spent more than 30 years covering horse racing for the Louisville Courier-Journal before taking a corporate buyout in 2015 to work in the industry. Part of her motivation was to give horsemen a voice. Inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Joe Hirsch Media Honor Roll, Rees is one of the most decorated turf writers in history, winning five Eclipse Awards for outstanding turf journalism in five different categories and over four different decades. She is married to retired owner-trainer Pat Dupuy and was a licensed hotwalker for many years.
